Wheelhouse II

Wheelhouse II

Wheelhouse II is a navigation aid program for professional marine pilots that can run on a variety of computing devices, such as the Panasonic laptop computer shown at the right side.

Wheelhouse II addresses the navigation aid needs of professional marine pilots in various areas, such as the following:

  • Pilot-configurable layering of chart  data: ACOE, Coast Guard, NOAA S57
  • Chart layering views via 6 pilot-configurable, single-touch view buttons
  • Conveniently update programs and charts from Raven website
  • Full-screen heading, COG, and SOG visible from distance for docking
  • AIS heading from the AIS pilot plug
  • AIS interface device is self-testable for isolating AIS pilot plug problems
  • AIS own vessel info can be used for own vessel and saved to vessel database
  • GPS positioning using either Raven high-performance GPS or AIS GPS
  • Intercept on-route vessels place and time: MEET, OVERTAKE
  • Intercept off-route vessels: MERGE INBOUND, MERGE OUTBOUND, CROSS
  • Vessel info-sharing over the internet via Raven’s SEND network
  • Many other features

CHARTING CAPABILITIES

Wheelhouse II has 6 pilot-configurable view buttons that allow pilots to layer ACOE Vector Data, Coast Guard navigation aid data,  and NOAA S57 chart data as desired.   The pilot can control which S57 data items and which ACOE and Coast Guard data items are displayed on a per-view basis.  At navigation time, the pilot can select the desired view, having previously defined the items that will appear in each of the views.

The above view shows ACOE vector data and Coast Guard buoy data without any S57 data.  Note view buttons in the upper right of the charting screen area.

POSITIONING CAPABILITIES
Wheelhouse II can get its position information from either a Raven high-performance GPS receiver or from the low-performance GPS receiver used in the ship’s AIS transponder.  The F1 Charting Screen will indicate which positioning source is being used.

Docking Using Raven DGPS

The vessel above is docking using the Raven GPS receiver.  The status, DGPS, in the upper right corner of the screen indicates the Raven GPS receiver is receiving differential corrections from a Coast Guard beacon.

Navigating Using Ship DGPS (from AIS transponder)

You can select to use the position for own ship coming from the AIS transponder.  The upper right of the screen indicates SHIP DGPS.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Wheelhouse II supports both on-route and off-route intercept computation.

Intercept

The vessel above will meet the selected vessel in 1 min, 45 sec.  The other vessel’s bearing, distance, COG, and SOG are shown.

List of Remote Vessels, AIS and SEND

Knots Planner

When you select a remote vessel, the intercept function shows where you will meet that vessel at current speeds.  If you want to meet the vessel at a particular time or place, the Knots Planner can compute the necessary speed to do that.
